The Last House on the Left

This past week, I was hanging out with my boyfriend and we were looking for a movie to watch on TV. On one of the channels I get was "The Last House on the Left", we had both heard of it and decided to watch it, not knowing much of what it was about. It came out in 2009 and is a remake of the 1972 movie. (As I learned when my brother saw us watching and told us that he had seen the original) The actors in this movie were very good, but not very familiar to me. Although after looking the main character girl up, I am familiar with many other movies she has been in.

Her name is Sara Paxton and she plays Mari Collingwood in the movie. She's a teenage girl who goes on summer vacation with her parents to their lakehouse. Her parents hesitantly give her the keys to their SUV and allow her to visit one of her friends from town, Paige. They meet a boy who is a customer at the convenience store where paige works and he takes them back to his hotel to share his marijuana with paige. When the boy's father and uncle come back unexpectedly, the boy is surprised and suddenely very uneasy. The movie then turns into a suspenseful torture movie where Mari is fighting for survival against the boys criminal family.

I knew that it was supposed to be a scary movie, but it was more intense and brutal than any other horror film I've seen. They show brutal beatings, gun and knife violence, and even rape! I was not expecting to see so much within the 2 hour duration. It was also very gruesome at some points and I had to cover my eyes or look away.

The Last House on the Left is very fast moving and full of irony and suspense. As a viewer, you know a lot more than the characters and of course your rooting for the good guys! I don't want to explain the whole plot and summarize and spoil the movie, but I will say that it is INTENSE! I'm not a big fan of horror movies, and this one being watched by curiousity and accident, I would reccomend it, just for you to see for yourself.

I asked a friend if he had ever seen it, and he said that he saw the old and new version, with the original being even worse than the new adaptation. I would be hesitant to see the 1972 original, while the 2009 version was hard enough to watch! Maybe one day I will feel brave and watch it, as perhaps many of you might be!
